Bakuchiol vs retinol: what's the actual difference?
The short version: bakuchiol is a bioactive extracted from the babchi plant that triggers the same skin-renewal pathways as retinol — more collagen, faster cell turnover, fewer dark marks — without the peeling, stinging and flaking. Retinol is faster and better studied. Bakuchiol is better tolerated and doesn't carry retinol's pregnancy restrictions.
If your skin has never got along with retinol, bakuchiol is the answer. If it has, there's no urgent reason to switch.
What is bakuchiol?
Bakuchiol is a compound extracted from the seeds and leaves of Psoralea corylifolia, the babchi plant, long used in Ayurvedic and Chinese medicine.
Structurally, it looks nothing like retinol. Functionally, it behaves remarkably similarly: research shows bakuchiol activates many of the same gene expression pathways as retinoids, prompting skin to build collagen and accelerate cell turnover.
That's the interesting part. It isn't a "natural version" of retinol in the marketing sense — it's a different molecule that arrives at a similar destination by a different route.

Is bakuchiol as good as retinol?
For the outcomes most people want — smoother texture, fewer fine lines, more even tone — the research suggests comparable results over a twelve-week period, with significantly fewer side effects.
Retinol has more evidence behind it and works faster at higher strengths, which matters for advanced photoaging. But speed is only an advantage if you can tolerate it. Retinol that irritates your skin into abandoning the routine at week three delivers nothing.
That trade-off matters more on melanin-rich skin. Irritation is a trigger for post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, so an active that causes redness and flaking can leave you with the dark marks you started the routine to fade. Choosing the better-tolerated option isn't a compromise — it's often the more effective strategy.
Is bakuchiol safe during pregnancy?
Retinoids are contraindicated in pregnancy, which is why bakuchiol comes up so often as a substitute.
Bakuchiol isn't subject to the same restriction, and it's widely suggested as a pregnancy-friendly alternative. However, the safety research is limited, and babchi has a history of traditional medicinal use that hasn't been fully studied in pregnancy.
Talk to your doctor or midwife before adding any active during pregnancy or breastfeeding. That isn't a hedge — the evidence genuinely isn't there yet.
Does bakuchiol help with acne?
Yes, in two ways. It has antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties, and the increase in cell turnover keeps pores from congesting. Because it's better tolerated than retinol, it's often a more workable option for skin that's already inflamed.
Can you use bakuchiol with retinol?
You can, and some people do — using bakuchiol on nights they aren't using retinol, or layering the two to improve tolerance. There's early evidence that bakuchiol's anti-inflammatory action reduces retinol irritation.
If you're new to either, start with one.
Where to find it
African Gold | Glow + Restore Oil Elixir Bakuchiol with peptides and baobab oil. The peptides signal collagen while bakuchiol drives renewal, and baobab replaces barrier lipids. Two to three drops on damp skin at night.
All Glow'd Up | Brighten + Clarify Serum Bakuchiol alongside 3-O-ethyl ascorbic acid, niacinamide, turmeric and liquorice extract. Built for tone and dark marks specifically.
Oil La La | Brighten + Glow Body Oil Bakuchiol and vitamin C for the body, with moringa and rose geranium.
Bakuchiol is not a quick fix. Give it twelve weeks of consistent use before deciding, and wear SPF daily throughout — renewal without protection just re-creates the damage.
