AHA's

Alpha hydroxy acids are water-soluble exfoliants that dissolve the bonds holding dead skin cells to the surface, so they shed faster than they would naturally. This fades dark spots, smooths rough texture, brightens dullness and softens fine lines.

Molecular size. Glycolic has the smallest molecule, so it penetrates deepest and works fastest — but it's also the most irritating. Lactic is larger, gentler and adds hydration. Mandelic is the largest and gentlest, which makes it the usual first choice for sensitive or pigmentation-prone skin.

AHAs are water-soluble and work on the skin's surface, making them best for dark spots, dullness and texture. BHAs are oil-soluble and work inside the pore, making them best for blackheads and congestion.
